The Rise of Bryson DeChambeau on Social Media

Did Bryson's Social Media Help His Public Persona?

I’m not trying to be a golf social media newsletter, but a sports social media newsletter. Again, this week was an easy topic for me to discuss.

Winner 2020 and now 2024 US Open Bryson DeChambeau. We could write a whole newsletter on his golf accolades, but here are some:

Winner of the NCAA individual championship in 2015, US amateur champion in the same year, 9 wins on the PGA Tour (including the two US Open titles), 3 European Tour wins and 2 LIV Golf victories too.

I thought this stat was cool: In 2015, he became the fifth player to win both the NCAA and U.S. Amateur titles in the same year, joining Jack Nicklaus (1961), Phil Mickelson (1990), Tiger Woods (1996), and Ryan Moore (2004).

The 30-year-old golfer, who currently resides in Grapevine, Texas is also nicknamed “The Scientist” because of his love for all things science of course. He majored in physics while studying at Southern Methodist University.

Now that you know some of his accolades and more about him, let’s get into him as his rise off the course, his social media growth over the last few years.

He currently boasts a following of 1.3 million followers on Instagram, 727K on YouTube, 543K on TikTok and 404K on Twitter/X.

Just see the growth over the last 24-48 hours for The Scientist (cc Joe Pompliano):

I’m sure it has grown even more since this tweet.

I find his YouTube particularly entertaining and gives people an inside look into who he is, which has grown his persona even more.

He does videos with Garrett Clarke aka GM Golf on YouTube, which the last two each had over 700K views. A video 10 months ago with Phil Mickleson did nearly 3 Million views (which was his best yet).

His Instagram is doing impressive numbers as well. He has a streak of 9 straight videos over 1 Million views too.

Although Scottie Scheffler has proved to be the best golfer in the world, could Bryson be the “face of the sport”? Why not?

He’s got the personality and the game.

He got into a kerfuffle (look up that SAT word 😄) with Brooks Koepka over red ants in 2020 and joined the controversial LIV Golf tour in 2022.

But, his public persona is headed in an astronomical positive direction in the recent years and that can be dedicated to two reasons: showing his pumped-up personality on the course (as can be seen in the last two majors) and his presence on social media too.

Can’t wait to see the next social media video he posts, as I believe he’s a must-see golfer on the course and a great person off the course. 🚀
